Falcons stumble against Lakers

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Clayton State starting five scored all but four of the team's points in a 66-51 victory over the Montevallo women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons started off the game with a quick Katie Colson basket on their first possession. After a Laker basket evened the score, Colson found Jacquelyn Thompson for a three-pointer and an early 5-2 lead.

Montevallo stayed ahead of Clayton State until there was 11:22 remaining in the first and a Tiayra Green three gave CSU a one-point lead. Clayton State was able to hold Montevallo to just seven more points the rest of the half and held a halftime lead of 30-20.

To start the second half, the Lakers went on an 11-0 run, bumping their lead up to 21 points.

Montevallo fought hard the rest of the way, but was never able to overcome the deficit and fell to the perennial Peach Belt power by the final score of 66-51.

Taylor Beverly and Thompson led the Falcons in points, each scoring 14. Beverly also recorded 13 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season.

Thompson again displayed her prowess from beyond the arc. The Peach Belt Conference's second leading three-point shooter hit four of her six attempts from deep.

Right behind Beverly and Thompson was Colson, who was 4-6 from the field and 4-5 from the line for 12 points. She also grabbed six rebounds.

All five of Clayton State's starters scored at least nine points.  Green led the way with 17 points. Shacamra Jackson added a double-double, with 11 points and 13 boards.

The Falcons have a quick turnaround, playing again this Monday night. This is a makeup game with Young Harris. The original game on January 30th was delayed due to winter weather.

The game is schedule for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off at Trustmark Arena.
