HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The University of Montevallo baseball team dropped a non-conference game to the UAH Chargers Wednesday evening, falling 9-4.
After holding the Falcons without a run in the top of the first, the Chargers struck in the bottom half of the opening frame, putting up three runs.
In the second, Montevallo cut into the early UAH lead by putting up a pair of runs of their own. Scotty Smith singled home Chase Bryant and later crossed the plate himself.
The Chargers extended their lead back out in the bottom half of second inning, putting two more runs on the board, making their lead 5-2 heading into the third.
Montevallo was able to get one back in the third, as Matthew Haskins and Vinny Rodriguez opened up the inning with back-to-back doubles. Rodriguez's double to left center drove in Haskins, making it a 5-3 game.
A run by UAH in the fifth was matched by the Falcons in the sixth. Haskins drew a walk with the bases loaded, scoring Dane Hutcheon.
Unfortunately for the Falcons, this would be the only run they would be able to score with the bases loaded and only one out.
UAH tacked on three more runs in the home half of the seventh and eventually won the game by the final tally of 9-4.
For Montevallo, Will Fulmer went 2-for-4 in his leadoff role. Haskins drove in one run and drew a walk.
Jackson Slaid hit cleanup in the game and went 2-for-3 with two walks.
Smith went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk.
Tanner Koch was impressive out of the pen for the Falcons, allowing only one hit and no runs in 2 1/3 innings. Aron McRee allowed no hits in 1 2/3 innings.
These two teams have now split the season series, as Montevallo defeated UAH earlier this season when the Chargers played at Kermit A. Johnson Field.
The Falcons now have a week off between games. Their next contest will be at North Alabama on April 16th.
First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
