MONTEVALLO, Ala. – University of Montevallo junior Jacquelyn Thompson scored a game-high 26 points, but the Falcons fell just short in a 68-67 setback against visiting Armstrong State University in a Peach Belt Conference contest Jan. 31.
The Pirates' Brigitta Barta scored the game-winning basket with eight seconds remaining.
Thompson finished 10-of-14 from the floor, including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc for the Falcons, who dropped to 1-18 overall and 0-12 in conference play.
Junior Katherine Goldsby, who scored the go-ahead basket with just more than 20 seconds remaining, finished with her third double-double of the season with 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
Senior Carrington Caise contributed 10 points. Freshman Katija Tarailo finished with five points and four rebounds, while junior Katie Colson chipped in four points and a team-high four assists.
The Falcons led by as many as 10 points in the opening half when Thompson drained a 3-pointer with 4:35 remaining in the half, giving Montevallo a 33-23 advantage.
The Falcons led 38-31 at the break.
Montevallo held the lead until the late in the second half when Alexia Somerset tied the game at 53-53 on a layup with 7:27 remaining.
The two teams traded the lead down the stretch until Goldsby scored the go-ahead basket and Barta secured the win for the Pirates in the final minute.
Montevallo will return to action Wednesday, Feb. 4 with a Peach Belt Conference contest against Georgia Southwestern State University.
Tip-off at Trustmark Arena is set for 5:30 p.m.
