Falcons sweep Braves in conference play

HOW IT HAPPENED

Montevallo took care of business quickly in the opening set and held off late charges by UNC Pembroke in the next two sets in a 3-0 sweep of the Braves.

The Falcons opened the first set with a 7-2 run, capped with a kill by sophomore Breana Thomas. A service ace by senior Nicole Holton capped a 10-1 run midway through the frame and Thomas provided the final kill to clinch a 25-13 victory for Montevallo in the set.

Montevallo opened the second set with a 12-4 run, fueled with four early kills by senior Rebekah Phelps in the frame. A kill by Thomas gave the Falcons a 18-7 lead in the set before the Braves held off a late run by UNC Pembroke in a 25-18 win in the set.

UNC Pembroke led 4-3 early in the third and final set, but a 6-0 run by Montevallo quickly gave the momentum back to the Falcons. Montevallo led 19-12 down the stretch following a kill by sophomore Kristy Bohan before securing the match with a 25-19 victory in the set. Thomas provided the final kill in the 3-0 sweep.

STAT OF THE MATCH

The Falcons finished with an impressive .327 hitting percentage in the match. Meanwhile, UNC Pembroke managed just a .111 attack percentage in the loss.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS

Senior Briana Marquez contributed a team-high 31 assists to go along with 12 digs, marking her seventh double-double effort this season.

Bohan led the Falcons with 10 kills and a .471 hitting percentage, marking the seventh time the sophomore from Huntsville, Alabama has registered an attack percentage of .400 or higher in a match this season.

Phelps finished with six assists in the Falcons' victory, tying her career high in the match. Phelps also registered six assists against Lenoir-Rhyne during her junior season in 2014.

UP NEXT

Montevallo will return to action Saturday, Oct. 17 with a Peach Belt Conference match against Francis Marion University at 2 p.m. The Falcons are hosting a silent auction with the team's lavender uniforms available for bidding, along with other athletic department items, as part of their annual Dig Lavender match.
