CARROLLTON, Ga. – University of West Georgia senior Jamie Sexton limited the University of Montevallo baseball team to two hits through eight innings as the Wolves clinched the three-game series Feb. 8 with a 9-0 win over the Falcons at Cole Field.
Sexton registered eight strikeouts without issuing a walk in his second start of the season.
Senior Matthew Haskins, who went 1-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base, singled to left-center field to lead off the fourth inning. Fellow senior Vinny Rodriguez, who finished 1-for-3, reached on an infield single in the seventh inning.
Freshman Collin Dupree, who was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning, was the Falcons' only other baserunner in the game.
Sophomore Alex Pondick (0-1) took the loss after allowing six runs, including three earned runs, on five hits with two strikeouts in four innings in his first start of the year.
Sophomore Joey Hume and freshman Drew Mullinax pitched well in relief for the Falcons, who fell to 1-2 on the season. Hume allowed just one hit with two strikeouts and one walk in two innings. Mullinax registered one strikeout in a perfect inning in relief.
West Georgia scored two runs in the bottom of the first and one run in the bottom of the second. The Wolves plated three runs in the fifth and three runs in the eighth to extend their lead.
Montevallo will return to action Friday, Feb. 13 in its home opener at Kermit A. Johnson Field.
The Falcons will take on Lindenwood (Mo.) University in their first game of the 2015 Montevallo Baseball Classic presented by Huddle House.
First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
