MONTEVALLO, Ala. – University of Montevallo sophomore Dane Hutcheon lined a game-winning RBI single to left field for the Falcons in a 6-5 walk-off victory over visiting GRU Augusta in the bottom of the 10th inning March 1, helping the Falcons clinch the Peach Belt Conference series against the Jaguars at Kermit A. Johnson Field.
Junior Aron McRee (1-0) picked up his first win of the season in relief, giving up one hit and finishing with one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings.
Senior Matthew Haskins led Montevallo (6-6 overall, 4-2 in Peach Belt Conference) offensively as he finished 3-for-4 at the plate. Haskins drove in one run and scored two runs.
Junior Vinny Rodriguez went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and drove in one run. Juniors Steven Knudson and Jeremy Hyde each finished with a homer in the victory. Knudson homered for the seventh time this season, while Hyde recorded his first of the year.
Junior Michael Simmons and sophomores Alex Jones and Jacob Whiting each finished with a single.
Sophomore Alex Pondick allowed three runs, including two earned runs, on five hits with nine strikeouts and just two walks in seven innings.
Junior Taylor Burr allowed two runs on five hits with one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings in relief.
GRU Augusta erased the Falcons' 5-3 lead after seven innings with one run in the top of the eighth inning and one run in the top of the ninth inning.
Simmons singled to right-center field in the 10th inning, advanced to second base on a wild pitch and moved to third base on a fielder's choice before scoring on Hutcheon's game-winning RBI single to left field.
The Falcons will return to action Tuesday, March 3 with a doubleheader against Tuskegee University at Kermit A. Johnson Field.
First pitch in the opening game of the twin bill is set for 2 p.m.
