Montevallo baseball falls to Cougars 20-3 in conference play

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The visiting Columbus State University lineup produced five home runs on the day to lead the Cougars to a 20-3 win over the University of Montevallo in a Peach Belt Conference baseball contest April 11 at Kermit A. Johnson Field.

The Falcons will look to avoid a sweep by the Cougars in the final game of the conference series Sunday, April 12. First pitch in the final game of the series has been moved up to 12 p.m. due to the possibility of inclement weather tomorrow evening.

Senior Zack Willoughby led Montevallo (18-20 overall, 10-13 in Peach Belt Conference) offensively as he finished 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in one run.

Senior Vinny Rodriguez, who drove in one run and scored one run, went 1-for-4 at the plate with a double. Senior Matthew Haskins finished 1-for-5 at the plate with a double and scored one run.

Junior Chase Bryant went 1-for-3 at the plate. Senior Alec Stiver finished 1-for-4 at the plate and drove in one run, while junior Thomas Bradey also went 1-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore Dane Hutcheon finished 1-for-5 at the plate.

Junior Steven Knudson scored one run for the Falcons.

Junior Landon Smith (1-5) took the loss for Montevallo in his 10th start of the season after allowing 17 earned runs on 13 hits, including five home runs, with three strikeouts and six walks in 5 2/3 innings on the mound.

The Falcons jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Haskins, who reached on a double down the right-field line, scored on a RBI double down the right-field line by Rodriguez. Knudson, who reached on a walk, scored on a RBI ground out by Stiver.

Montevallo plated in its final run in the bottom of the third inning when Rodriguez reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a RBI single by Willoughby.

The Cougars didn't score in the first inning before putting multiple runs on the scoreboard in each inning over the span of the next six innings to clinch the 20-3 victory, which included grand slams by both Matt Nettles and Mike McClellan.
