HOW IT HAPPENED

Montevallo had a historic day at the plate as the Falcons blasted a program record eight home runs in a 11-7 win over visiting Miles in a non-conference game at Kermit A. Johnson Field.

The Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a pair of solo home runs by junior Dane Hutcheon and senior Taylor Walker.

Miles took a 4-2 lead after plating four runs in the top of the second inning, which included a three-run homer by James Gardner.

Montevallo tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom half of the frame when sophomore Chad Wagner reached on a single through the left side before scoring a two-run homer by junior Jacob Whiting to left field.

Three Falcons homered in the bottom of the third inning to help Montevallo take a 7-4 lead. Walker blasted his second solo shot in the game to left field, while junior Matthew Furuto and Wagner also rocketed solo home runs to left field in the inning.

Freshman J.D. Minor led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run to extend the Falcons' lead to 8-4. Montevallo took a 9-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Whiting reached on a single to left field before scoring on a RBI double to right-center field by Minor.

Miles trimmed the Falcons' lead to 9-6 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Freshman Tyler Krabbe led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a solo home run to left field to break the Falcons' program record of seven home runs set by Montevallo against West Georgia in 2007 and Columbus State in 2008.

Hutcheon, who reached on a single to right field, scored the Falcons' final run in the game on a RBI single to right-center field by Walker later in the seventh inning to give Montevallo a 11-6 lead.

Miles scored one run in the top of the ninth inning before senior Taylor Burr entered as the fifth pitcher in the game for the Falcons and recorded the final two outs.

Senior Landon Smith (1-0) earned the win for the Falcons after allowing six runs, including five earned runs, on seven hits with five strikeouts in six innings on the mound. Smith finished one strikeout shy of tying his career high against Georgia College during his junior season.
