HOW IT HAPPENED
Montevallo swept a doubleheader against Ohio Valley in its first action at Kermit A. Johnson Field this season.
The Falcons took an early 1-0 lead in the first game of the series when junior Daniel Pardo reached on a fielding error by Ohio Valley before scoring on a run-scoring double by junior Dane Hutcheon in the bottom of the first inning.
After the Fighting Scots tied the game in the top of the fifth inning with a solo homer, Montevallo took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the frame when junior Dominic DeVille reached on a double to right-center field before pinch runner Michael Simmons scored on a RBI double to left field by sophomore Chad Wagner.
Ohio Valley took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning before the Falcons plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good. Hutcheon, who reached on an infield single, and senior Jeremy Hyde, who was hit by a pitch, both scored on a three-run homer to right-center field by senior Taylor Walker.
The Falcons extended their lead to 11-3 with a three-run double to left field by Walker and a three-run double to right-center field by senior Thomas Bradey in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Fighting Scots added a run in the top of the eighth inning before the Falcons capped the scoring in the opener with a three-run homer by Hyde in the bottom half of the frame.
Senior Cody Hughes earned the win on the mound after allowing three runs, including two earned runs, on four hits with nine strikeouts in six innings. Senior Landon Smith earned the save while allowing just one unearned run on two hits while compiling five strikeouts in three innings in relief.
Montevallo plated 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning on its way to a 23-0 shutout victory over Ohio Valley in the nightcap. Hyde provided the highlight in the second game with a grand-slam in the third inning.
Senior Aron McRee got the win after allowing just four hits while compiling four strikeouts in four innings on the mound. Freshman Jamison Roney struck out five batters in a two-inning relief stint.
