Hughes, Pardo capture NCBWA Southeast Region weekly awards

PEMBROKE, N.C. – University of Montevallo senior Cody Hughes has been named the NCAA Division II Southeast Region Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, while junior Daniel Pardo was named the Player of the Week in the Southeast Region.

Hughes tossed a complete-game shutout as the Falcons defeated nationally-ranked Francis Marion 3-0 to complete a three-game sweep in Peach Belt Conference play. 

The senior from Phenix City, Alabama scattered six hits and walked only one while striking out eight. He retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth, setting down 10 Patriots in a row at one point. 

Francis Marion had two hits in an inning only once and had baserunners reach third only two times in the game. Hughes set down the side in order again in the ninth, finishing the complete game with 118 pitches, 84 of those for strikes. 

Hughes moves to 2-0 on the season and is 11th in the Peach Belt Conference with a 3.21 ERA and seventh in the conference in strikeouts.

Pardo had a monster week for the Falcons, hitting .474 with a 1.158 slugging percentage, three home runs and 14 RBIs. 

The junior outfielder from Tampa, Florida hit .583 in the Falcons' three-game sweep of nationally-ranked Francis Marion, including a 4-for-4 outing in the second game where he hit for the cycle and had a grand slam.

Pardo opened his week with a pair of home runs and five RBIs in a doubleheaders sweep of Tuskegee before collecting hits in all three games against Francis Marion. Pardo drove in a pair in the opener and then had seven RBIs in game two as he became the first Peach Belt Conference player this season to hit for the cycle.

Pardo finished the series with a 2-for-4 outing and a stolen base. Pardo did not strike out in 19 at-bats and was perfect in the field with nine putouts. 

Pardo is currently third in the conference in triples, tied for seventh in home runs and RBIs and 11th in slugging percentage.

The Falcons will return to action Wednesday, March 9 with a home game against UAH at Kermit A. Johnson Field. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
