HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Chargers, who are ranked No. 9 in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association NCAA Division II poll, plated the first two runs in the game with a two-run homer by Austin Sanders in the top of the first inning.
- Montevallo took a 3-2 lead with three runs in the bottom half of the frame following a RBI double by senior Taylor Walker, a RBI single by junior Daniel Pardo and a RBI sacrifice fly by junior Dominic DeVille.
- Alabama-Huntsville scored one run in each of the next four innings to push its lead to 6-3.
- Ben Rhodes led off the top of the ninth inning with a solo home run to extend the Chargers' lead to 7-3.
- The Falcons threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning when senior Michael Simmons reached on a walk before beating a throw to second base on a fielder's choice by junior Matthew Furuto.
- Junior Dane Hutcheon drove in both Simmons and Furuto with a two-run double down the left-field line to trim the Chargers' lead to 7-5 before senior Jeremy Hyde struck out looking to end the game.
STAT OF THE DAY
Alabama-Huntsville relief pitcher Logan Crook entered in the second inning and pitched seven shutout frames before giving a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Crook was effective against the Falcons' power hitters in a 7 2/3 inning relief stint as earned the win on the mound.
BEYOND THE NUMBERS
Sophomore Colton Nussel recorded a career-high seven strikeouts in a 3 1/3 inning relief stint against the Chargers.
