Walk-off victory helps Falcons clinch series against Armstrong State

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons plated four runs in the first three innings in the first game of the doubleheader to jump out to a 4-0 lead, built with RBI singles by juniors Daniel Pardo and Dane Hutcheon and a RBI sacrifice fly by junior Dominic DeVille.
  • The Pirates trimmed the Falcons' lead to 4-3 following a RBI double by Chandler Corley and a two-run double by Berry Aldridge in the top of the fourth inning.
  • Armstrong State took a 5-4 lead in the top of the sixth inning on a RBI single by Aldridge and a RBI sacrifice fly by Will Austin.
  • The Falcons took a 6-5 lead following a RBI triple down the left-field line by Pardo and a RBI fielder's choice by junior Michael Simmons in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • Montevallo pushed its lead to 10-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning following a pair of two-run homers by seniors Jeremy Hyde and Thomas Bradey.
  • The Falcons jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap, as well, following a RBI double to left-center field by Pardo in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The Pirates tied the game at 1-1 following a RBI single by Stetson Smith in the top of the second inning.
  • Armstrong State took a 3-1 lead after Smith's second RBI single in the game in the top of the fourth inning and a solo home run by Jerad Curry in the top of the fifth inning.
  • The Pirates extended their lead to 5-1 after plating a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning.
  • Montevallo trimmed the Pirates' lead to 5-4 following a three-run homer to center field by senior Taylor Walker in the bottom of the seventh inning.
  • Armstrong State took a 6-4 lead in the top of the eighth inning on a RBI single by Cody Sherlin and plated their final run to extend its lead to three runs on a RBI single by Austin in the top of the ninth inning.
  • Sophomore Collin Dupree started the Falcons' rally with his two-run single to left-center field before fellow sophomore Chad Wagner tied the game at 7-7 when he scored on a wild pitch.
  • Hutcheon delivered the game-winning RBI single up the middle to plate Dupree and give the Falcons their first walk-off win of the season.

The Falcons improved to 1-8 in games decided by one run after securing their first walk-off victory of the season.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS

Junior Tanner Koch registered his first save of the season after pitching 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief with a pair of strikeouts in the first game of the doubleheader.

Freshman Jamison Roney improved to 5-1 on the mound after allowing four earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and four walks in 6 1/3 innings in the first game of the twin bill.

Freshman Justin Whitley earned his first win of the season after recording the final out as the Falcons completed the come-from-behind victory in the nightcap.
