Falcons cap season with 11-2 win over Flagler in conference tournament

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Montevallo took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on the 19th home run of the season by senior Taylor Walker.
  • The Falcons extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the first inning on a RBI double to left-center field  by senior Michael Simmons before freshman Jack Mayo gave Montevallo a 5-0 lead on his two-run single, marking his first hit of the season.
  • Flagler trimmed the Falcons' lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the first inning as Dylan Jones scored when James Jean was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • Senior Thomas Bradey gave Montevallo a 7-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning with his two-run triple to right-center field.
  • The Falcons took a 8-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning when Mayo reached on a single up the middle and scored on a wild pitch.
  • Flagler scored its final run in the game on a RBI single up the middle by Frankie Sagarese in the bottom of the eighth inning.
  • Bradey blasted a two-run homer off the scoreboard in left field to plate Walker, who reached on a single up the middle, and give Montevallo a 10-2 lead in the top of the ninth inning. The home run was Bradey's ninth on the season.
  • Senior Chase Bryant plated the Falcons' final run in the game with a RBI double down the right-field line in the top of the ninth inning.
  • Senior Landon Smith (3-2) earned the win after giving up just one hit with one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings in relief.

STAT OF THE DAY

The Falcons' plated 11 runs on 18 hits against the Saints, giving Montevallo 31 runs on 47 hits in three games in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS

Senior Thomas Bradey was named to the Peach Belt Conference All-Tournament Team following the conference tournament.

Freshman Jack Mayo finished with a season-high three hits as he went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in two runs.

Senior Taylor Walker finished in the top five in three separate single-season categories in the Falcons' record book. Walker finished second in the record book after driving in 74 runs. He also finished fourth in the record book with 92 hits and fifth in the record book with 19 home runs.

Senior Cody Hughes moved into sixth all-time in most career starts in the Falcons' record book with the 35th start of his career against Flagler.

Junior Dane Hutcheon ended the season with a 24-game hitting streak, just four games shy of the school record set by Vinny Rodriguez.

The Falcons' pitching staff finished with a 4.88 earned run average this season, marking the lowest earned run average by the team since Montevallo posted a 4.84 earned run average in 2008.

UP NEXT

The Falcons' 2016 season has come to a close. Montevallo finished with a 28-25 overall record and posted a program-best 17-13 record in Peach Belt Conference play during the regular season on its way to earning the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament.
