HOW IT HAPPENED

Montevallo snapped a three-game losing streak in impressive fashion with a 98-69 win over visiting Clayton State in a Peach Belt Conference contest Jan. 30 at Trustmark Arena.

Montevallo got off to a quick start in the opening half of play, jumping out to an early 9-0 lead in the first three minutes following back-to-back 3-pointers by senior Kevin Kelly and junior Jamaar Taylor before Nathan Powell finally got the Lakers on the board.

The Falcons led by as many as 17 points in the opening half following a layup by Kelly with 3:30 remaining in the half, which gave Montevallo a 38-21 advantage.

Taylor and senior Javonte Douglas led the Falcons in the first half, scoring 13 and 12, respectively. Montevallo shot lights out with a 57.7 shooting percentage from the field in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Falcons finished where they left off in the first half in the final 20 minutes of the game, continuing to shoot lights out from beyond the arc as they outscored the Lakers 54-40 in the second half.

Douglas led the Falcons with 31 points, while Taylor added in 26 points, including several monstrous dunks. Kelly contributed 14 points on 6-9 shooting from the floor.

Montevallo finished with 24 assists on 33 made field goals in the 29-point win. Kelly and sophomore Tony Bagtas led the Falcons with six assists each.

STAT OF THE GAME

Montevallo shot a season-high 65 percent (13-of-20) from beyond the arc against Clayton State, finishing just shy of the school-record 68 percent shooting from 3-point range in a single game set during the 2012-13 season against UNC Pembroke.
