Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Montevallo Falls to West Florida 1-0 on the Road

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Montevallo women's soccer team was defeated by West Florida 1-0 in Gulf South Conference play.

Montevallo played their first of three games in five days today on the road at West Florida. A game that was originally set for earlier in the season, the conference clash was postponed due to inclement weather.

The first half was a rain-soaked affair and both teams had a hard time putting passes together in the opening minutes. Despite the Argonauts dominating possession, the best opportunities of the first half came to the Falcons. Montevallo got close to finding goal before the break through substitute Hannah Waki, but her shot was smothered by UWF keeper Katelyn Burkhardt.

West Florida opened the second half the dominant team and had their reward three minutes into the period. Leonie Kreil led an attack which saw her control the ball on the right side to draw defenders out of position. Her run led her to the touchline and her cutback was met by Shantell Thompson. Thompson's mishit shot was fumbled by Perez-Bayon and Kreil was on hand to tap it in for the Argonauts.

Kreil had an opportunity to grab a second goal in the 60', but her shot was just wide of the right post. Kreil and Thompson each had an opportunity moments later, but the Falcons survived on both occasions.

Michaila Franklin had a chance on a breakaway but the ball was cleared by the Argo's defense. The Falcons had another chance with just over 20 minutes to play, but Madison Madewell's free-kick was caught by the senior Burkhardt.

Despite the chances on offense, the Falcons could not break the Argonauts' defense as West Florida held on for the 1-0 victory.

GAME NOTES
  • West Florida outshot Montevallo in the first half, 8 to 3, but both sides only had two shots on goal each. The Argos outshot the Falcons 19 to 7 on the match.
  • Kreil's goal was her 6th of the season which puts her alone as the team's leading scorer. Kreil has three goals in the last three games.
  • Montevallo's goalie, Sydney Young, was forced off due to injury and fellow sophomore Judith Perez-Bayon was brought on in her place.
  • After only winning one of their past four games, the win gives West Florida their 8th of the season. It was the Argo's first home win since September 24's win over Delta State.
  • All eight of the first half corners went the way of West Florida. The Argonauts led the game's corner count 12 to 1.
  • The Falcons were held scoreless for only the third time all season. They have yet to lose back to back games and hope this trend continues as they look to bounce back against Shorter on Friday.
  • Michaila Franklin's two shots on goal led the Falcons. The goalscorer Leonie Kreil had a game-high five shots.
