Montevallo holds off UNA in impressive 3-1 victory over rival

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo volleyball team pulled off an impressive 3-1 victory over the University of North Alabama in a Gulf South Conference match Oct. 17 at Trustmark Arena after the Lions entered the contest second overall in conference standings.

Montevallo won the first two sets, 28-26 and 25-22, over North Alabama before the Lions took the third set 25-20. An even fourth set eventually went the Falcons' way, 26-24, after North Alabama fought hard late in the set to try to extend the match.

The Falcons improved to 9-10 overall and 4-5 in Gulf South Conference play following the win over the Lions, who fell to 17-6 overall and 4-5 in conference play.

Freshman Evelina Teran led Montevallo with 15 kills while hitting .500 in the four-set victory. Teran also contributed three digs and eight blocks.
Senior Kristy Bohan contributed 11 kills and eight blocks. Freshman Liz Tisch started at setter for the Falcons and finished with a team-high 33 assists, while sophomore Harley Masoner chipped in 14 assists. Junior Brie Blume led the Falcons with 23 digs in the match.

Montevallo will return to action Friday, Oct. 20 at home against Lee University in Gulf South Conference play. First serve from Trustmark Arena is set for 6 p.m.

GAME NOTES
  • Freshman Evelina Teran had a game-high 15 kills. Teran boasted a .500 hitting percentage.
  • Fellow freshman Amanda Nugent and senior Kristy Bohan contributed 12 and 11 kills, respectively, with Nugent registering the fourth double-double of her collegiate career.
  • North Alabama's Lexie Bradley had a game-high 28 kills, and Jessica Austin contributed 20 kills in a losing effort.
  • Junior Brie Blume led the Falcons in digs with 23 in the match. Michaela Henderson and Amanda Nugent also finished in double digits, with 12 and 11 each.
  • Montevallo continued to play two setters and each registered double digit assists on the game. Liz Tisch contributed 33 and Harley Masoner had 14 assists for the night.
  • Montevallo recorded seven service aces during the win, with Brie Blume and Amanda Nugent contributing two each.
  • Montevallo had a team total 17.5 blocks compared to just six for North Alabama. Kristy Bohan and Evelina Teran had game-high eight blocks each, which takes Bohan to 71 blocks on the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Falcons and the Lions went back and forth in the early part of the first set, and Kristy Bohan had an early pair of kills. North Alabama led by as many as three, but three successive kills pulled the Montevallo even at 11-11. Amanda Nugent added two kills as the two teams stayed even down the stretch, until a couple of attack errors by the Lions late in the frame secured the Falcons' 28-26 win in the set.
  • Montevallo jumped out to an early 4-1 and never looked back during the second set. Evelina Teran's three kills helped the Falcons to a 16-12 lead. Two kills from North Alabama's Lexie Bradley pulled the Lions within one, but her attack error saw the Falcons' jump out to a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-22 win in the frame.
  • Teran and junior Shannon Dudley had kills at the beginning of a third set that was tied 10-10 before North Alabama went on a seven-point run, which helped them to a 25-20 win to keep the match alive.
  • The Falcons raced out to a 10-5 lead in the fourth set, but the Lions tied the set up at 13-13 before taking a one-point lead on a kill by Jessica Austin. The Falcons jumped out to a 20-18 lead thanks to kills from Teran and Blume. The Lions held off three match points to tie the game at 24-24, but a Brioni Dixon kill helped the Falcons secure the victory.
