Falcons drop conference match against Mississippi College 3-1

CLINTON, Miss. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team fell on the road at Mississippi College 3-1 in a Gulf South Conference match Oct. 7.

Junior Brie Blume and senior Kristy Bohan led the Falcons with 11 kills and 10 kills, respectively. Blume also registered a team-high 18 digs as she posted the third double-double of her collegiate career against the Choctaws, who snapped a five-match losing streak and improved to 8-10 overall and 2-5 in Gulf South Conference play.

Sophomore Michaela Henderson contributed 13 digs for the Falcons, who fell to 7-8 overall and 3-5 in Gulf South Conference play. Freshman Liz Tisch chipped in a team-high 19 assists, while sophomore Harley Masoner finished with 15 assists.

The Falcons will return to action Friday, Oct. 13 in the first of three matches next weekend in the Gulf South Conference-Sunshine State Conference Challenge. The complete schedule for the event will be announced Monday.

GAME NOTES

  • Junior Brie Blume registered the third double-double of her collegiate career as she compiled a team-high 11 kills and a team-best 18 digs in the match.
  • Senior Kristy Bohan recorded double-digit kills for the seventh time this season with 10 kills against the Choctaws.
  • Freshman Liz Tisch and sophomore Harley Masoner again split time as the Falcons' setter and finished with 19 assists and 15 assists, respectively.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Mississippi College raced out to a 6-0 lead in the opening set to gain early momentum before the Falcons battled to trim the Choctaws' lead to 21-19 late in the frame following a service ace by junior Brie Blume, but the home team closed the frame with a 4-2 run to secure a 25-21 win in the set.
  • The Falcons flipped the script in the second set and jumped out to an early 11-4 lead following back-to-back kills by senior Kristy Bohan before holding off a late charge by Mississippi College in a 25-23 victory in the frame.
  • Montevallo opened the third set with a 5-1 run following a pair of early kills by junior Shannon Dudley, but the lead was short lived as the Choctaws erased the deficit with a 9-3 run and closed the frame with a 6-2 run to clinch a 25-21 win in the set.
  • The Falcons led 11-8 early in the fourth and final set following a kill by sophomore setter Harley Masoner, but Mississippi College stormed back with an impressive 12-0 run on its way to clinching the match with a 25-20 victory in the set.
