RECAP
MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- The University of Montevallo women's basketball team lost their season opener 70-61 to Miles College in the GSC/SIAC Challenge.
The Falcons got off to a slow start as Miles went on an 8-0 run to start the opening period of play. A pair of free throws by D'Miyah Foster got the Falcons on the board. The Golden Bears dominated the opening period and outscored the Falcons 27-11.
Montevallo struggled to find any offensive rhythm in the first half as their shooting woes continued in the second period. Miles pushed their lead to as many as 21 points before Montevallo started to cut into the lead. After Nautika Philpot hit a layup to cut the lead to 19 points neither team was able to score for the next four minutes of play. The Falcons eventually found their spark and went on a 9-2 run to close out the first half and trailed Miles 38-25 at halftime.
Montevallo cut the Golden Bears lead to single digits halfway through the third period and got to within six points in the final minute of play. Miles scored a pair of free throws in the final minute to lead 48-40 going into the final period of play.
In the fourth period, Miles was able to push their lead back to 16 points before closing it down to nine points at the end of the game. The Golden Bears cruised to a 70-61 victory over the Falcons.
