RECAP
MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's basketball team defeated Tuskegee 73-71 on the final day of the GSC/SIAC Challenge to improve to 1-1 on the season.
The Falcons faced a 12-point deficit at halftime but outscored the Golden Tigers in the second half to notch their first win of the season.
Montevallo led by as many as seven points in the opening period of play, but Tuskegee fought back to hold a slim three-point lead over the Falcons. The period was evenly contested but Tuskegee's three-second chance points were the difference. At the end of the period, the Golden Tigers led the Falcons 18-15.
The second period belonged to the Golden Tigers who dominated in the paint and seemed to find a spark off their bench. Tuskegee outscored Montevallo 10-0 in points in the paint and 12-2 in points scored by bench players. Tuskegee pushed the lead to 12 points and led the Falcons 42-30 at halftime.
In the third period, the Falcons began to chip away at the Golden Tigers' lead and pulled the game to within one point at the end of the period. The Falcons shot 15 free throws in the period and converted 11 of them. Montevallo outscored Tuskegee 23-12 in the period to head into the final period of play down 54-53.
Both teams battled in the final period and Montevallo was able to get a six-point lead in the game. However, Tuskegee was able to pull within a point of the Falcons in the final minute of play on a pair of free throws. After Nautika Philpot went 1-of-2 from the free throw line with eight seconds remaining to make it a two-point game, Tuskegee made one last ditch effort at the buzzer.  The three-point shot fell short as Montevallo survived to hold on to the 73-71 victory.
