RECAP

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's basketball team defeated Stillman 63-60 in the first of two meetings in a week between the in-state rivals.

The series has been even in the past few seasons, and the Falcons were looking to avenge last year's loss to the Tigers at Trustmark Arena.

Montevallo and the Tigers played an evenly matched first period of play.  Montevallo held onto a two-point lead, 12 to 10, at the end of the first period.

In the second period, Montevallo used a 12-0 run that spanned six minutes of play to lead the Tigers by 10 points.  Montevallo closed out the half with a double-digit lead and entered the locker room up 29-19 at the break.

The Tigers came out in the second half and battled the Falcons in the post.  Stillman outscored Montevallo 14 to 0 in points in the paint and used an eight-point run in the third period to take a 37-36 lead over the Falcons.  That lead was short-lived as the Falcons retook the lead and ended the period with a 46-40 advantage over the Tigers.

Stillman kept up the offensive assault in the fourth period and tied the game three times.  Paige Ward was instrumental in stifling the Tigers attack.  Every time the Tigers started to get on a run a timely three-pointer from Ward put the Falcons back out in front.  Down the stretch, Ward hit a set of free throws to ice the game and seal the 63-60 victory for the Falcons.
