GAME NOTES

  • Montevallo shot 38 percent from the field in each half of tonight's game.  Both teams shot 38 percent from the floor, however, one of the deciding factors in tonight's games was the 41 percent shooting percentage that Claflin had in the second half.
  • Montevallo managed to get to the free throw line 11 times in the game and went 8-of-11 from the charity stripe.  On the other side, Claflin was rewarded with 30 free throw attempts and was 18-of-30.
  • Montevallo's defense capitalized on its chances and converted 23 points off turnovers.
  • Both teams had a physical presence in the paint in tonight's game as Montevallo held a two-point edge in points in the paint, 24-22.
  • Claflin's bench outscored the Falcons 30-11 and registered 14 second-chance points.

RECAP

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo women's basketball team was defeated 64-58 in their final non-conference game of the season by Claflin University at Trustmark Arena.

The Falcons created multiple scoring opportunities in the first period and dominated play in the post.  Montevallo scored six points in the paint and pestered the Panthers on defense to force three turnovers which they converted into seven points.  At the end of the period, Montevallo held a 19-15 advantage over Claflin.

The second half was a little tighter, but the Falcons were able to reach their largest lead of the game at the beginning of the period and led by as many as eight points.  The Falcons continued to work the ball inside and outscored Claflin 8-4 in points in the paint. 

At the break, the Falcons led the Panthers 32-29.

Montevallo came out flat in the second half and their offense became stagnant.  The Falcons were held to nine points and were outscored 16-9.  The Panthers attacked the basket in the third period and were rewarded with eight second-chance points by outrebounding the Falcons 14-9.  Montevallo had relinquished their lead by the end of the period and now trailed Claflin 45-41.

In the final period, the Panthers held the advantage for most of the period.  Montevallo came back and tied the game at 57-57 with 39 seconds left on the clock on a jump shot from Nautika Philpot.  Claflin hit key free throws down the stretch to seal the 64-58 victory.
