Falcons split doubleheader on first day of Falcon Frenzy

HOW IT HAPPENED

Montevallo won its home opener against Tuskegee 9-1 before falling to Mississippi College 8-4 in the nightcap on the first day of the Falcon Frenzy.

Tuskegee took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on a solo homer by Jamaica Williams.

After scoring one run in the second inning, the Falcons plated five runs on RBI singles by junior Dylan Bailey, sophomore Lady Sarah Federico and freshman Haley Barnette and a RBI triple by junior Celestia Davila.

Montevallo extended its lead to 8-1 in the fourth inning on RBI singles by junior Kelsey Vining, Federico and Barnette.

Junior Saralyn Campbell lined a double into the left-center field gap in the sixth inning to plate junior Kirby Tuck and secure the run-rule victory for the Falcons.

Mississippi College jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the nightcap.

An RBI double by freshman Holly LaForce and a RBI single by freshman Mariel Bertossi helped the Falcons trim the deficit to 5-2 in the third inning.

Sophomore Lauren Van Steenwyk plated Vining with an RBI double in the fourth inning before the Choctaws scored three more runs to extend their lead to 8-3. Junior Dylan Bailey blasted her first home run of the season to score the Falcons' final run in the fifth inning.

STAT OF THE DAY

Senior Jocelyn Rivera registered her first complete game of the season after allowing just one run on seven hits with six strikeouts and three walks against the Golden Tigers in the Falcons' home opener.

UP NEXT

The Falcons will take on defending NCAA Division II National Champion North Alabama on the second day of the Falcon Frenzy event Saturday, Feb. 11. First pitch is set for 3:45 p.m.
