HOW IT HAPPENED

Montevallo split its final two games in the Southern Softball Showdown between the Peach Belt Conference and the Gulf South Conference, following up a 8-4 loss to Lee in its first game with a 4-2 come-from-behind win over West Alabama in its final game of the event.

The Falcons dropped the first game of the doubleheader against Lee 8-4 despite finishing with seven hits in the contest compared the Flames' four hits.

Lee took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning before the Falcons plated four unanswered runs in the top of the fifth inning to jump out to a 4-2 advantage.

Freshman Haley Barnette started the rally with a RBI single up the middle before junior Kelsey Vining scored on a RBI fielder's choice by senior Hannah McCreless. Freshman Brianna Stella drove in the Falcons' final two runs with a double to right-center field.

The Flames plated six runs in the bottom half of the frame to secure the victory.

West Alabama scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning in the nightcap before Montevallo rallied in the top of the seventh inning.

Barnette led off the frame with an infield single before fellow freshman Holly LaForce reached on a single. Fellow freshman Mariel Bertossi then blasted a three-run shot, her second home run of the season, to center field to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead.

Junior pinch-runner Darbi Duke scored an insurance run for the Falcons on a groundout RBI by junior Celestia Davila to push the Montevallo lead to 4-2.

Sophomore Abbey Pratt earned the win in the circle after registering the Falcons' first complete game of the season, allowing just two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts against the Tigers.

STAT OF THE DAY

Freshmen accounted for nine of the Falcons' 14 combined hits in the two games on the final day of the Southern Softball Showdown,  which included a three-run homer by Mariel Bertossi and a two-run double by Brianna Stella.
