Falcons drop doubleheader against USC Aiken in conference play

HOW IT HAPPENED

Montevallo suffered a pair of heart-breaking one run losses on the road at USC Aiken, dropping a 3-2 decision in 12 innings in the first game before falling 5-4 on a walk-off win by the Pacers in the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game of the doubleheader.

The Pacers outlasted the Falcons in the longest game in program history for the one-run victory in the series opener.

USC Aiken took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo homer to left-center field by Hannah Price.

The Falcons tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning when sophomore Lady Sarah Federico lined a double into right-center field before scoring on a RBI single to center field by freshman Holly LaForce.

Montevallo took a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning when junior Darbi Duke led off with an infield single before scoring later in the frame on a RBI double by Federico.

The Pacers tied the contest at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning on a RBI single down the left-field line by Hanna Hyder.

USC Aiken finally broke the stalemate in the bottom of the 12th inning when Magan Jean Thrower lined a double down the left-field line to plate Chandler Terrapin for the game-winning run.

The Falcons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the nightcap following a RBI single by freshman Mariel Bertossi to right field that plated junior Celestia Davila in the top of the first inning.

Montevallo pushed its lead to 2-0 in the top of the third inning when LaForce led off the frame with a triple down the right-field line before scoring on a RBI sacrifice fly to center field by junior Kelsey Vining.

The Pacers plated three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead. Sydney Kate Murphy started the rally with a RBI double and Leah Boghosian scored on a wild pitch by senior Jocelyn Rivera before a RBI single by Terrapin gave USC Aiken the lead.

Montevallo took the lead back with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning, which gave Montevallo a 4-3 advantage.

Davila, who led off the frame with a walk, scored the game-tying run on a RBI double to left field by Vining. Vining scored the go-ahead run later in the frame on a RBI groundout by Bertossi.

Terrapin tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning with her solo homer to right field with one out in the frame. Thrower drove in the game-winning run later in the frame with a RBI double off the wall in left field.

STAT OF THE DAY

USC Aiken came through in clutch time in the bottom of the seventh inning in both games in the doubleheader. The Pacers scored a combined three runs on six hits in the bottom of the seventh inning in the doubleheader, erasing a one-run deficit entering the frame in each game.

The Falcons will return to action Sunday, March 19 with a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on the road at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina.
