HOW IT HAPPENED
Montevallo used late game dramatics for the third time this weekend to seal the series sweep of the 21st ranked Columbus State Cougars. A ninth inning rally by the Falcons gave Montevallo an 11-10 walk-off victory.
Sebastian Samuels, the game two hero, hit a solo homerun in his first at-bat to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.Â
The Falcons held the 1-0 lead until the top of the fourth inning when starting pitcher Jamison Roney allowed a pair of runs that gave Columbus State a 2-0 lead.
Columbus State scored another run in the fifth inning and looked to have taken control of the game after plating three runs in the sixth inning to make it a 6-1 ballgame.Â
Montevallo continued to battle and scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Cougars' lead to 6-5. Back-to-back home runs helped fuel the Falcons rally. Caleb Ledbetter had a two-RBI homerun to centerfield and Tyler Guesnard knocked a solo homerun over the right field fence.
The Cougars rallied back and pushed their lead to five runs thanks to scoring a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and ninth innings.
Montevallo mounted a six-run rally in the final frame. The game-tying run was scored by Guesnard who had a two-RBI single to knot the game at 10-10.Â
With the game-winning run on second base, Coach Chandler Rose put in Matthew Furuto to pinch run for Guesnard. The Cougars decided to walk Ryan Brooks to try and force a double play with one out already on the board. Mark Castellucci came to the plate for his first at-bat of the game and singled up the middle to score Furuto from second to seal the come from behind victory.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
This is the first time since joining the Peach Belt Conference that the Falcons have swept the Cougars. Heading into this weekend's series with Columbus State, the Falcons last victory over the Cougars was back in the 2014 season.
