HOW IT HAPPENED

Montevallo fell to visiting West Florida 8-1 in the opening game of a scheduled doubleheader before game two was cancelled due to inclement weather.

The Falcons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when junior Celestia Davila lined a double down the right-field line and advanced to third base on a single by sophomore Lady Sarah Federico before scoring on a fielder's choice RBI by junior Kelsey Vining.

West Florida scored three runs in the top of the third inning, capped with a RBI single by Rhiannon Sassman, as the Argonauts took a 3-1 lead.

The Argonauts pushed their lead to 4-1 in the top of the fourth inning when Caitlin Steel reached on a fielding error by the Falcons and scored later in the frame on a throwing error by Montevallo.

West Florida extended its lead to 6-1 with two runs in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run single by Callan Taylor. The Argonauts plated their final two runs in the top of the seventh inning on a RBI double by Jacey Castro and a RBI sacrifice fly by Sassman.

Becca Taylor allowed just one run and struck out six batters without issuing a walk in five innings to earn the win in the circle for the Argonauts. Senior Jocelyn Rivera gave up six earned runs and struck out three batters as she took the loss in a complete game.

Game two will not be made up this season. The Falcons and the Argonauts will meet again next year in Gulf South Conference play.

STAT OF THE GAME

The Falcons' three errors against West Florida marked just the fourth time Montevallo has finished with three errors or more in a game this season.
