CATAWBA, N.C. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team split a pair of matches Sept. 1 on the first day of the season, falling to host Catawba 3-2 in a hard-fought match in its season opener before sweeping Chowan 3-0 in its second match of the day at the Catawba College Tournament.
Montevallo (1-1) and Catawba (2-0) split the first four sets in the Falcons' season opener before the Indians closed out a 3-2 win with a come-from-behind victory in the fifth and final set.
Junior Brie Blume recorded the first double-double of her collegiate career after posting a career-best 17 kills to go along with 16 digs.
The Falcons took care of Chowan (0-2) quickly in the nightcap in a 3-0 victory. Senior Kristy Bohan paced Montevallo with 12 kills and five blocks, while sophomore Harley Masoner finished with a career-high 34 assists.
The Falcons will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 2 in the final match of the event against Belmont Abbey College. First serve is set for 12:30 p.m. Eastern/11:30 a.m. Central.

- Brie Blume registered the first double-double of her career with a career-best 17 kills and 16 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Catawba used a pair of 4-0 runs midway through the opening set on its way to a 25-22 win in the frame.
- Brie Blume and Kristy Bohan provided a pair of kills down the stretch as the Falcons closed out a 25-18 win in the second set with a 8-2 run.
- The Indians went on a 7-2 run midway through the third set to provide cushion down the stretch as Catawba claimed the set 25-22.
- Blume took control late in the fourth set and recorded back-to-back kills to help the Falcons extend the match with a 26-24 win in the frame.
- Back-to-back kills by Amanda Nugent helped Montevallo race out to a 10-7 lead in the fifth and final set before Catawba closed with a 8-1 run to claim the come-from-behind victory with a 15-11 win in the frame.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kristy Bohan racked up five kills down the stretch as the Falcons closed out a 25-17 win in the opening set with a 12-5 run to end the frame.
- Montevallo opened the second set with a 7-3 run as it coasted to a 25-16 win in the frame, with Nugent, Blume and Bohan providing back-to-back-to-back kills to clinch the set.
- The Falcons again raced out to an early 12-5 lead in the third and final frame on their way to clinching the match with a 25-15 win in the frame as freshman Claudia Chisolm closed out the frame with a kill.
