Falcons top Albany State, fall to Valdosta State in pair of matches

VALDOSTA, Ga. –  The University of Montevallo volleyball team fell to host Valdosta State University 3-0 in its first Gulf South Conference match of the season before defeating Albany State 3-0 in a non-conference affair Sept. 15 at The Complex in Valdosta, Georgia.

The Falcons suffered a 3-0 setback against the Blazers in their first Gulf South Conference contest since 2008. Valdosta State (5-3 overall, 1-0 in Gulf South Conference) doubled the Falcons' offensive output with 48 kills compared to the 24 kills compiled by Montevallo.

Freshman Amanda Nugent led the Falcons (4-4 overall, 0-1 in Gulf South Conference) with seven kills in the match. Three Falcons finished with double figures in digs in the match, as junior Nicolette Fiessinger and sophomore Michaela Henderson led Montevallo with 12 digs each and junior Brie Blume added 11 digs.

Montevallo then defeated Albany State 3-0 in a non-conference match at the neutral site.

Junior Brie Blume paced the Falcons with 11 kills in the victory. Senior Kristy Bohan added nine kills, while freshman Amanda Nugent contributed eight kills.

Sophomore Michaela Henderson contributed a match-high 16 digs.

The Falcons will be back in action Tuesday, Sept. 19 on the road at the University of West Florida in another Gulf South Conference contest in Pensacola, Florida.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Valdosta State raced out to a 8-3 lead in the first set and used a commanding 8-0 run midway through the frame before holding on for a 25-20 win.
  • The Falcons raced out to a 9-4 lead in the second set with three early kills by freshman Amanda Nugent before the Blazers closed the frame with a 9-3 run to secure a 26-24 victory in the set.
  • The Blazers opened the third set with a 15-6 run and closed the match with a 9-0 run to secure a 25-10 win in the frame.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Montevallo raced out to a 9-3 lead in the opening set with three early kills by senior Kristy Bohan, who also contributed the final kill in the set to close out a 25-13 win in the frame.
  • The Falcons dominated the second set and began the frame with a 20-6 run, capped with a kill by junior Brie Blume, on their way to coasting to a 25-10 victory in the frame.
  • Montevallo held off Albany State in a hard-fought third set, using a 7-0 run late in the frame to clinch the three-set victory with a  25-21 win in the frame.
