MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo men's basketball team defeated nationally-ranked Christian Brothers University 74-60 in a Gulf South Conference contest against the preseason favorite in the conference.
The hot-shooting Falcons (9-9 overall, 5-5 in Gulf South Conference) shot 57.1 percent from the floor and beyond the arc and knocked down 83.3 percent of their attempts from the charity stripe while holding the Buccaneers to 37.7 percent shooting from the field. Christian Brothers (13-5 overall, 5-5 in Gulf South Conference) entered the contest ranked No. 22 in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) NCAA Division II national poll.
The Montevallo bench outscored Christian Brothers 34-17, with senior Tyler Brough leading the charge with 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range and 2-of-2 shooting from the free-throw line.
Junior Chris Williams paced the Falcons with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor while also grabbing a game-high nine rebounds.
Senior Jamaar Taylor added 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field and grabbed six rebounds.
Junior Jeremiah Curtis rounded out a quartet of Falcons in double figures with 10 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor while also grabbing six boards.
Christian Brothers took a 11-4 lead early in the contest following a layup by Alex Trentman with 16:36 remaining in the first half before took control of the game.
A layup by Curtis capped a 24-7 run by the Falcons and gave Montevallo a 39-21 advantage, which marked its largest lead in the opening half before settling for a 40-24 lead at the break.
The Falcons led by as many as 25 points on several occasions, the last time on a layup by Williams, which gave Montevallo a 55-30 lead with 14:11 left in the game.
