MONTEVALLO, Ala. – A late game comeback by the University of Montevallo women's basketball fell short in a 67-65 defeat to the Christian Brothers Buccaneers in Gulf South Conference play.
Montevallo is now 2-16 overall this season and 0-10 in the Gulf South Conference.
In the first half, the Falcons were outscored 39-32 as the Buccaneers dominated the play in the paint. Christian Brothers scored 20 of their first-half points in the low post and also converted 12 points off turnovers.
Montevallo was led by Nautika Philpot in the opening half who scored 11 points and also dished out three assists from her guard position.
In the third period, the game appeared to get away from the Falcons as the Buccaneers outscored Montevallo 20-12 in the period and at one point led by as many as 21 points with 2:17 remaining in the period.
However, the Falcons looked to turn the game around in the fourth period as the Montevallo defense held the Buccaneers to just eight fourth period points.
The Falcons entered the final period down 13 points to the Buccaneers and found themselves down by as many as 18 points with 8:11 left to play in the game. Montevallo went on a 19-3 run to trail Christian Brothers with 55 seconds to play in the game.
The Falcons' defense forced Christian Brothers into a turnover and had an opportunity to take the final shot. Jomekia Morine drove the lane with four seconds remaining and her final shot missed its mark as Christian Brothers held on to the 67-65 victory.
