GAME NOTES

·         Montevallo had two players score in double figures.  Kourtnie Smith led the team with 12 points and Nautika Philpot netted 11 points for the Falcons in today's game.

·         Smith was also the team leader in rebounds and pulled in a team-high six for the Falcons.  Smith grabbed four offensive rebounds and also grabbed two on the defensive end.

·         Philpot led the team in assists with a high of six for the Falcons.  She also had three steals in the game today.

·         Newman took advantage of the Falcons miscues and scored 21 points off of Montevallo turnovers.

·         Both teams sought to control the paint and each team scored 26 points in the low post.

·         Montevallo's bench continued to shine and contributed 32 points for the Falcons.

RECAP

TOPEKA, Kan. – The University of Montevallo women's basketball team fell to the Newman Jets 70-65 in their final game of the 2018 Parrish Hotels Thanksgiving Classic.

Montevallo is now 3-3 on the season after dropping both games this weekend.

The Falcons and the Jets both got off to a slow start in this one as Montevallo scored its lowest amount of points in a period to open the game. Montevallo was held to eight points and the Jets led Montevallo 15-8 after the first period.

In the second period, the Falcons and the Jets played each other close but Montevallo was never able to take the lead.  The Falcons were able to cut the game close and made it a one-point game with 6:13 left in the half before Newman started to pull away again.  Newman ended the period with a three-pointer to take a six-point, 31-25 lead into halftime.

Montevallo used the third period of play to pull to within one point of the lead.  The Falcons outscored the Jets 24-19 in the period.  Savannah Lee hit a jumper with 26 seconds remaining to make it a 50-49 game in favor of the Jets.

Montevallo's Tiara McLeod opened the period with a layup in the paint to give the Falcons their first lead of the game at 51-50.  The period went back and forth from there with each team retaking the lead.  Montevallo built their largest lead of the game with 3:07 remaining when they pulled out to a 63-59 lead. The Jets hit a pair of key three-pointers down the stretch and made a pair of free throws in the final minutes to claim the win 70-65.

Montevallo will return to the state of Alabama to face Jacksonville State in a road contest on November 27th at 7:00 pm.
