Falcons sweep Georgia Southwestern in doubleheader

MONTEVALLO HIGHLIGHTS

Sophomore Brianna Stella finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and drove in five runs while scoring three runs in the victory.

Sophomore Haley Barnette went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and drove in two runs.

Senior Darbi Duke finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base while driving in one run and scoring two runs.

Junior Lady Sarah Federico went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in one run.

Senior Kelsey Vining finished 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and drove in one run while scoring three runs.

Sophomore Holly Lafroce, who scored one run, and freshman Bayleigh Lott recorded one hit each.

Senior Dylan Bailey and sophomore Mariel Bertossi finished with one stolen base each.

Freshman Mychael McMillan allowed just one hit and struck out four batters in a two scoreless innings in relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Montevallo took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a RBI double to right-center field by senior Kelsey Vining, a RBI single to center field by sophomore Brianna Stella and a RBI ground out by junior Lady Sarah Federico.

The Hurricanes plated one run in the bottom of the first inning and two runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 3-3.

The Falcons scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run double to left field by Stella and a RBI single to left field by sophomore Haley Barnette to take a 6-3 lead.

Georgia Southwestern plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 7-6 lead.

Montevallo scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 11-7 lead after senior Darbi Duke scored on a RBI single to left field and Stella drove in two runs with a single to center field before Barnette lined a RBI double to left field.

Senior Darbi Duke paced the Falcons offensively as she finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and scored two runs while also stealing three bases in the win.

Senior Kelsey Vining went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run and a double while driving in two runs and scoring one run.

Sophomore Brianna Stella went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in one run while stealing one base.

Senior Celestia Davila finished 2-for-2 at the plate and drove in one run.

Junior Lady Sarah Federico went 1-for-2 at the plate and drove in one run.

Sophomore Haley Barnett, who drove in one run, and sophomore Holly LaForce scored one run each.

Junior Amanda Ingram pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings with a strikeout in relief.

Junior Alexis Bonanno closed out the victory with four strikeouts in 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.


HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons scored a run in the top of the first inning on a RBI bunt single by sophomore Brianna Stella to take a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Haley Barnette drove in a run with a RBI sacrifice bunt in the top of the third inning to extend the Falcons' lead to 2-0.

Georgia Southwestern scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Senior Kelsey Vining homered to left-center field in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3.

Montevallo took the lead for good after plating two runs in the top of the sixth inning on a RBI sacrifice fly by junior Lady Sarah Federico and a RBI single through the left side by senior Celestia Davila, which gave the Falcons a 5-3 lead.

Vining lined a RBI double to left-center field to push the Falcons' lead to 6-3 in the top of the seventh inning.

UP NEXT
 
The Falcons will host the University of West Florida in a three-game Gulf South Conference series April 21-22. First pitch in the series opener is set for Saturday, April 21 at 4 p.m., with Senior Day activities set for 3:30 p.m.
