CLEVELAND, Miss. – After a disappointing start on the first day at the GSC Baseball Championships, the University of Montevallo baseball team is looking to bounce back on the second day with a matchup against the West Georgia Wolves at 8:30 p.m.

The Wolves and the Falcons faced each other earlier in the season in a three-game series in Carrollton, Ga.  Montevallo won the regular season series 2-1 and outscored the Wolves 22-9 through three games.

Both teams enter today's game with their backs against a wall and in need of a win.  In their previous game yesterday, the Wolves fell to West Florida 6-3 in their opening game.

SCOUTING REPORT

The Falcons will face one of two probable pitchers in today's game with the Wolves.  Probable starters for the matchup are Andres Fernandez and Ryan Parker.

Fernandez comes into the game with a season ERA of 4.06 and has allowed 83 hits this season and has struck out 80 batters.  In his previous outing against the Falcons in the opening game of the regular season series, Fernandez threw eight innings of work and struck out six batters but allowed four earned runs.

Parker didn't fair well against the Falcons either in their previous meeting this season.  The Wolves' pitcher threw five innings and surrendered five earned runs on nine hits and only managed four strikeouts. This season, Parker has a 5.25 ERA and has recorded 41 strikeouts.

Offensively, the Wolves lean heavily on the bats of Cade Marlowe and Price Peters.

Marlowe enters today's game with a .370 batting average which leads the team.  Marlowe has also driven in 48 runs which is second on the team and has 18 extra base hits, including three home runs.

Peters is second on the team in batting average with a .354 but leads the team in runs batted in with 50 of them this season.  Peters has 22 extra base hits this season and leads the team with eight home runs.

NOTABLES
  • Both teams are ranked in the latest NCAA South Region Rankings that came out on May 2, 2018.  West Georgia is at No. 7 in the rankings while Montevallo holds down the No. 5 spot. Both teams are playing to keep their postseason hopes alive and today's game will have an impact on that outcome.
  • In their previous meeting this season, the Falcons dominated the Wolves on the road.  Montevallo won that series 2-1 and lost the middle game of the series 8-3.  The Falcons won the series opener 6-1 and the series finale in commanding fashion 13-0.
  • Alex Pondick will get the start on the mound for the Falcons in today's game against the Wolves.  Pondick pitched in game three of the regular season series with the Wolves and helped orchestrate a 13-0 victory.  The senior pitcher struck out five batters in that game and allowed seven hits on his way to one of four shutouts this season.  The first team All GSC pitcher has a 7-1 record heading into today's game and boasts a league-best 1.92 ERA
