CLEVELAND, Miss. – The University of Montevallo baseball team responded in game two of the GSC Baseball Championship with a 12-0 victory over West Georgia last night. Today's matchup with the West Florida Argonauts will be their final game of the championships.
Montevallo and West Florida met earlier this season in a three-game series in Montevallo. The Falcons won the series by sweeping the doubleheader on day two of the series.
West Florida is the second regionally ranked team that the Falcons will have faced at the championships.
SCOUTING REPORT
The Falcons will likely face pitcher Kirk Maddox in the game three of the championships. Maddox enters the game with a 5.69 ERA and has a record of 3-6 on the season.
In the previous meeting with the Falcons, Maddox only threw 2 1/3 innings of work and gave up two runs on four hits and only struck out one batter.
Offensively, the Argos are paced by GSC Freshman of the Year Matthew Estrada who has a .347 batting average this season and has driven in 21 runs.
Nick Kerkman leads the Argos in runs batted in and with 53 RBI and has a batting average of .330.

- Both teams are ranked in the latest NCAA South Region Rankings that came out on May 2, 2018. West Florida is at No. 8 in the rankings while Montevallo holds down the No. 5 spot. Both teams are playing to keep their postseason hopes alive and today's game will have an impact on that outcome.
- In their previous meeting in the regular season, West Florida dominated the opening game of the series and defeated the Falcons 12-2. On the second day, the Falcons responded and outscored the Argos 21-12 in two games to win the series.
