Falcons Sweep Day 2 at Pioneer Classic

Score: Georgia College 1, Montevallo 3 (24-26, 25-22, 25-27, 22-25)
Records: Georgia College (5-5 overall) | Montevallo (8-1 overall)

GAME NOTES
  • A trio of Falcons recorded double-digit kills in the match.  Amanda Nugent led the team with 15 kills against the Bobcats.  Evelina Teran recorded 14 kills and Brioni Dixon was credited with 13.
  • Harley Masoner recorded two service aces in the match.
  • Hannah Fernandez led the team defensively at the net and denied the Bobcats five times and her five blocks also led the team. 
  • Dixon and Savannah Roys also registered three blocks each.
  • Roys and Masoner split time as the setter for the Falcons and each had 22 assists.
  • Brie Blume led the team on defense and had 31 digs in the match. 
HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1
  • The opening set of the match was closely contested between the two sides.  Neither team held a big advantage over the other throughout the entire set.
  • Both teams traded points until midway through the set when Montevallo went on a four-point run to jump out to a 12-10 lead.
  • Georgia College responded with a four-point run of their own to retake the lead, 14-12.
  • The Bobcats took their largest lead late in the set on another four-point run that gave them a 19-16 lead.
  • The Falcons fought back and tied the game at 20-20 with a three-point run of their own.
  • Georgia College had the Falcons at set point leading 24-23 when Nugent registered a kill to make it 24-23 in favor of the Bobcats.
  • Still facing set point, Hannah Fernandez and Savannah Roys denied Georgia College at the net to tie the game at 24-24.
  • Montevallo capped off a four-point run to win the set 26-24.
 Set 2
  • Georgia College controlled the set for most of it and even led the Falcons by eight points midway through the set, 13-5.
  • Montevallo did fight back with an 8-2 run that made it a 15-13 game in favor of the Bobcats.
  • Late in the set, Georgia College looked to have the Falcons against the ropes and led 21-15.  Montevallo fought back with a 7-1 run that tied the set at 22-22.
  • The Bobcats closed out the game with three straight points to win the set 25-22.
Set 3
  • The Bobcats looked to have the set under control early on when they jumped out to a 10-4 lead.
  • Georgia College had an answer for every attack from the Falcons and led late in the set 23-14.
  • A four-point run from the Falcons made it 23-18 in favor of the Bobcats.
  • Georgia College had the Falcons facing set point again with a 24-18 lead but Montevallo went on a 7-0 run that ended with a kill from Brie Blume to give the Falcons a 25-24 lead.
  • After the Bobcats tied the game at 25-25, the Falcons scored two straight points to claim the set 27-25.
Set 4
  • The final set went just like the others and was a closely contested affair.  However, this time Montevallo found themselves jumping out to an early 5-1 lead.
  • Georgia College tied the game up at 9-9 after a 4-0 run a little later in the set.
  • Montevallo went on a 4-0 run of their own to respond and held the lead the rest of the set.
  • The Bobcats pulled the set to within a single point as the Falcons led 23-22 late.
  • Dixon and Teran combined for a block to set the Falcons up for set point at 24-22.
  • Dixon closed the set and the match with a kill to lift the Falcons to a 25-22 victory.

GAME NOTES  HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1
  • Lincoln Memorial controlled the majority of the set and led by as many as nine points late in the set as they led the Falcons 19-10.
  • The Falcons scored ten unanswered points to take a 20-19 lead late in the set.
  • The Railsplitters and the Falcons went back and forth exchanging points.  With the game tied at 26-26, Dixon registered back to back kills to end the set 28-26 in favor of the Falcons.
Set 2
  • Montevallo opened the set on a 3-0 run and held the lead until Lincoln Memorial used a three-point run of their own to tie the game at 8-8.
  • Late in the set, the Falcons went on a 4-0 run to take a 24-17 lead.  The Railsplitters made it a 24-23 game before Desiree Rodriguez got the final point of the set with a kill.
Set 3
  • Montevallo jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the set and never surrendered the lead. 
  • Several runs throughout the set help Montevallo to a 21-14 lead late.  The Falcons' seven-point lead was their largest of the game.
  • Lincoln Memorial was able to make it a 23-21 game in favor of the Falcons but Montevallo closed out the set with two straight points.
UP NEXT
The Falcons will return home to open up their conference schedule against Auburn-Montgomery.  First serve will be at 6:00 pm on September 11.
