PENSACOLA, Fla. – The University of Montevallo women's basketball team fell on the road at the University of West Florida 85-79 in a Gulf South Conference contest Jan. 5 in Pensacola, Florida.

The Falcons were shooting nearly 60 percent from beyond the arc midway through the third quarter, but the hot shooting from outside cooled off slightly as Montevallo finished the game shooting 43 percent from 3-point range while West Florida shot 51 percent from the floor overall.

West Florida owned a 40-30 rebound advantage, including a 11-7 edge in offensive rebounds.

The Falcons dominated in the paint with a 74-48 advantage and the Montevallo bench outscored its counterparts 24-8 in the contest.

Montevallo (8-5 overall, 4-2 in Gulf South Conference) opened the contest with a 19-9 run, capped with a layup by freshman Shyan Flack with 3:13 remaining in the first period, before the Falcons ended the quarter with a 23-16 lead.

The Argonauts opened the second period with a 16-2 run and took the lead for good on a free throw by Daniell Norquest with 5:22 remaining in the quarter before carrying a 37-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.

A jumper by Belle Bistrow gave West Florida its first double-digit lead at 45-35 with 7:34 remaining in the third period and the Argonauts led by as many as 13 in the quarter.

West Florida led by as many as 14 points in the fourth period before the Falcons used a 9-3 run late in the contest to trim the deficit to 84-79 following a layup by Flack with 19 seconds remaining in the game, but the Argonauts held on for the win.
Sophomore Nautika Philpot led the Falcons with 16 points while also dishing out a team-high six assists.

Junior Paige Ward added 15 points, while freshman Shyan Flack contributed 14 points and junior Aaliyah Rice finished with 11 points.

Sophomore Kourtnie Smith grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

Montevallo will return to action Tuesday, Jan. 8 on the road at Samford University. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
