CARROLLTON, Ga. – Senior
Tristan Nienhuis's record-breaking performance led the University of Montevallo men's golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Matt Dyas Invitational with a final team score of 6-under 858, in the three-round tournament at the Oak Mountain Championship Golf Course.
Montevallo - which wrapped up the fall part of its schedule with the tournament - posted a 285 in round one, 287 in round two, and closed things out with a 286 in the final round.
Nienhuis, coming off a 21st-place finish at the Derrall Foreman Invitational two weeks ago, set a new school record for the lowest tournament total by finishing with a 10-under 206 to break the old record by one stroke. Nienhuis - a senior from Drachten, Netherlands - carded scores of 70, 69 and 67 to place second overall, three shots behind Delta State's Zach Zediker, who fired rounds of 66, 71 and 66 to win the tournament title at 13-under 203.
West Georgia, the tournament host, finished as the team champion with a final score of 28-under 836 (286-272-278), nine shots clear of runner-up Lee University (281-279-285-845).
Also in the top 10 for the Falcons was senior
Luke Wilson, who tied for ninth at 5-under 211. Wilson started his tournament with a 3-under 69 and followed up with a 2-under 70 before finishing up at even-par 72 to maintain a spot in the top 10.
Junior
Brady Carman also finished in the top 20 for Montevallo, placing 16th at 2-under 214 following rounds of 70, 71 and 73.
Redshirt senior
Brett Batchelor and junior Cody Maddox rounded out Montevallo's team for the tournament. Batchelor tied for 46th at 14-over 230 (76-80-74) and Maddox finished in a tie for 50th at 17-over 233 after scores of 79, 77 and 77.
Junior
Noah Dennis competed in the tournament as an individual for the Falcons and chalked up a top-20 finish. The transfer from Central Alabama Community College finished in a tie for 19th at even-par 216 after posting rounds of 73, 71 and 72.
The Falcons are now off until the spring portion of their schedule, which kicks off at the Matlock Invitational in Lakeland, Fla. The tournament, which is hosted by Florida Southern College, will be played at the Lone Palm Golf Club on Feb. 10-11.
