UM Shuts Out Shorter on Senior Day, 7-0

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Seven women's soccer players netted seven goals Sunday afternoon to deliver University of Montevallo's seventh Gulf South Conference victory, a 7-0 shutout of Shorter University. With the win, Montevallo (9-3-2, 7-1-1 GSC) tied the program's record for most conference wins in a season and clinched its bid to the GSC Championships.

Prior to the game, Montevallo honored five seniors who have helped turn the program around the last four years with a combined 34 wins: Michaila Franklin, Madison Madewell, Judith Perez-Bayon, Tylor Ring and Victoria Whitehouse. Junior Keller Makemson, who will graduate early, was also honored.

Montevallo's defense did not allow a shot on goal, helping Perez-Bayon earn her first shutout of the season in the last home game of her career - her seventh career shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
 
23' | Madison Madewell opened the scoring, scoring off a double assist from Michaila Franklin and Yasmeen White
29' | Samaro Lino netted her sixth goal of the season, assisted by Tylor Ring.
43' | Kaeri Ward netted an assist from Lino to give Montevallo a 3-0 halftime lead.
58' | Tylor Ring scored her 10th career goal in her final UM home game. She was assisted by the scoring going in Romee Contreras and Alexandra Dan.
60' | Romee Contreras punched in her sixth goal of the season to remain tied for the team lead with Lino. Melanie Stevens had the assist.
63' | Yasmeen White was assisted by senior Victoria Whitehouse.
70' | Tori Ochoa capped the scoring with an assist by Espy Sanche.


GAME NOTES
  • Montevallo has won four straight games and is 5-0-1 in its last six games, all in Gulf South Conference play.
  • This is the third-straight year a UM team has shut out an opponent 7-0 in October (UAH 2018, Talladega 2017). Prior to 2017, Montevallo had not scored seven or more goals since 2007. 
  • The seven goals scored is tied for the second most goals against a GSC school in program history behind an eight goal game against Christian Brothers in 1997. UM previous scored seven against GSC opponents in 2018 against Alabama-Huntsville, 2007 against North Alabama and 2004 against Delta State.
  • UM has now won seven conference games each of the last two seasons - the most conference wins in the program's NCAA Division II history.
  • The Falcons out shot the Hawks, 25-4, including 13-0 on goal. 
  • Montevallo scored on 53.8 percent of its shots on goal.
  • Victoria Whitehouse led Montevallo with four shots, while three others had two shots each.
