Fernandez Ties Career High as Volleyball Moves into Top Four

VALDOSTA, Ga. -The University of Montevallo volleyball team grabbed their fifth straight victory on Friday night, taking out the Blazers of Valdosta State on the road, three sets to one. In the match, Hannah Fernandez tied a career high with 10 blocks for the Falcons.

The Falcons (15-11, 8-3 GSC) outlasted Valdosta State (11-15, 3-7 GSC) in four sets, 22-25, 25-14, 28-26, 25-19. The win moves Montevallo past Union University (Tenn.) for fourth in the GSC standings by a half-game, and only two and a half games behind the conference leaders from the University of West Florida.

GAME NOTES
 
  • Brioni Dixon and Amanda Nugent led the way for Montevallo with 13 kills apiece.
  • Evelina Teran and Desiree Rodriguez were also in double-figures with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
  • Savannah Roys dished out 45 more assists in the match and added 13 digs for the double-double.
  • Nugent also had a dozen digs to complete a double-double of her own
  • Michaela Henderson led the way with 17 digs for the Falcons in the match.
  • Fernandez had 10 blocks in the match, including four solo blocks. Rodriguez also participated in five blocks.
  • Montevallo dominated the team stats in the match, scoring 80.5 points, walloping 56 kills, serving up nine aces, and posting 15 blocks as a team.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1
  • Valdosta State took command early in the opening frame, beginning the night on a 9-2 run. 
  • The Falcons chipped away at the deficit, but they were never able to draw level, as VSU held on to win the set 25-23.
Set 2
  • After VSU took the opening point of the second stanza, UM got things rolling with a 7-1 run to take a 7-2 lead.
  • Valdosta State closed the gap to 15-12, but UM closed the frame on a 10-2 run to square the match at a set apiece.
Set 3
  • The teams traded runs early in set three, with 3-0 and 5-0 stretches for UM surrounding eight straight points for VSU, and the set remained close throughout
  • There were 11 ties and six lead changes in the set, and the period went beyond the scheduled distance before Montevallo emerged victorious 28-26.
Set 4
  • Valdosta State opened an early 5-3 lead in the fourth stanza, but Montevallo answered with a 7-1 run to take a 10-6 advantage. 
  • VSU tied things at 13 in the middle stages of the set, but they were unable to wrestle the lead away from the Falcons, and Montevallo slowly pulled away to the 25-19 win to take the match 3-1.

The Falcons will wrap up a quick two match road trip with a date with the University of West Georgia (14-10, 8-2 GSC). The Falcons trail the Wolves by one half game for third place in the GSC Standings.
