Saint Leo knocks off Falcons at GSC/SSC Challenge

Lions make 11 3-pointers in 71-58 victory

MONTEVALLO, Ala.  – Saint Leo University rained three-pointers on Montevallo Sunday afternoon and never trailed en route to a 71-58 victory over the Falcons on the final day of the GSC/SSC Challenge.

Saint Leo's Wade Coomer made a trey a minute into the game to give the Lions an early 3-0 lead and they never looked back, building a double-digit lead in the first 5:14, with Isaiah Hill's jumper making it 15-4 Saint Leo with 14:46 to go in the first half. Montevallo was unable to get any closer than nine until Xavier Malcom drained a 3-pointer with 7:25 left before halftime to make it 27-21 Saint Leo.

Later in the half, Cedric Jackson's trey cut the Lions' lead to 32-27 with 4:40 showing on the clock, but Saint Leo outscored Montevallo, 9-3, over the rest of the half to take a 41-30 lead into halftime.

Montevallo's Ivan Smith scored the opening basket of the second half to get the Falcons back to within 41-32 with 19:48 to go, but Saint Leo went on a 12-2 run over a span of 4:15 to take control and open up a 53-34 advantage with 15:33 left. The Falcons got no closer than 12 the rest of the way as the Lions cruised to their first win of the season.

Saint Leo finished the game 29-for-60 (48.3 percent) from the field overall, including 11-of-32 (34.4 percent) from three-point range. Montevallo was 18-for-47 (38.3 percent) overall and 6-for-16 (37.5 percent) from behind the three-point line.

Hill led Saint Leo with 16 points, with Yalen Reed and Wade Coomer adding 14 apiece for the Lions. Wade Lowman paced Montevallo with 13 points and nine rebounds and Malcom had 10 for the Falcons.

Montevallo is back in action Thursday, Nov. 14, when the Falcons host Clark Atlanta at Trustmark Arena in non-conference action. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

GAME NOTES
  • Montevallo and Saint Leo have now split their two all-time meetings. Montevallo won the first meeting, 74-66, on Nov. 11, 2018 in a neutral site game in Tampa, Fla.
  • Montevallo had 14 turnovers that Saint Leo turned into 23 points, while the Lions had 12 turnovers, off which the Falcons scored 11 points.
  • Saint Leo outscored Montevallo, 34-18, in the paint and had 21 assists to the Falcons' 5.
  • The Lions only shot two free throws in the game, making both, while Montevallo was 16-for-24 at the charity stripe.
