Second Half Shooting Lifts UM past Clark Atlanta

MONTEVALLO, Ala.  – An explosive second half of shooting lifted the University of Montevallo men's basketball team to an 84-76 victory over Clark Atlanta University on Friday night in Trustmark Arena. The win moves the Falcons to 2-1 on the season and in NCAA Division II South Region play. 

Despite shooting 26.5 percent in the first half, Montevallo trailed by only three, 37-34, at halftime. UM's Jonas Parker and CAU's Romaine Thomas put on a clinic in the first half, scoring 16 and 15 points, respectively, to carry their team. Parker already had a double-double at the break with 10 boards.

Parker finished the night with a career-high 24 points and added 12 rebounds for his first NCAA Division II double-double.

Clark opened the second half with three consecutive 3-pointers, sparking a 15-4 run to go up by 11 points, 52-41, with 14:28 to play. The Falcons closed the gap with the steady play by Wade Lowman in the paint and Cedric Jackson's 3-point shooting. Shooting 65.2 percent in the second half, Montevallo cut the margin to a one-possession game six times before Jackson popped a three with 8:08 to play to give the Falcons a 65-64 lead. The visiting Panthers managed to tie it, 65-65, but never regained the lead. Jackson answered with another 3-pointer, his seventh of the night, to ignite a 10-2 run and push UM's lead to eight points, 75-67, with less than four minutes remaining.

Clark Atlanta got no closer than five points, 75-70, when Xavier Malcom hit a second-chance 3 to keep the difference above eight points for the final two minutes. The largest lead of the night, 84-64, came in the final seconds.

Montevallo (2-1) continues its non-conference homestand Saturday, Nov. 16 when it hosts defending SIAC Champion Miles College in Trustmark Arena for a 6 p.m. tipoff. 


GAME NOTES
  • Montevallo's 65.2% shooting performance in the second half is the best half of shooting the Falcons have had since shooting 66.7% against UAH in February 2018.
  • Cedric Jackson's seven 3-pointers were one shy of tying the UM single-game record (8), held by four former Falcons. He is te 14th Falcon to ever hit seven 3s in a game. 
  • Jackson scored 20 points in the second half to lead all players in the final 20 minutes of action and finished the night with a career-high 23 points on 7-of-9 shooting behind the arc. 
  • Jonas Parker scored a career-high 24 points to lead Montevallo in the game and posted his first double-double with 12 rebounds.  
  • Wade Loman also had a double-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds - his first of the season and third of his UM career. 
  • Montevallo and Clark Atlanta's assists to turnovers were a exactly opposite of each other. The Falcons dishing out 12 assists and turning the ball over 14 times, while Clark Atlanta had 14 assists and 12 turnovers. 
  • The game featured seven ties and 12 lead changes
  • UM is now 2-1 against NCAA Division II South Region opponents and 1-0 against Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) foes this season. The game is the first in a three-game run against SIAC teams.
