MONTEVALLO, Ala. – University of Montevallo men's basketball led from tip to buzzer Saturday afternoon to defeat Delta State University, 76-61, in the Gulf South Conference opener.
After a pair of UM turnovers and three-straight 3-point misses by DSU in the first minute,
Jonas Parker hit a 3 to open the scoring. Parker went on to lead Montevallo with 25 points from 11 field goals. An and-one layup by Parker gave the Falcons their first 10-point lead, 28-17, five minutes before halftime. The lead grew to 13 points before taking a 38-29 lead into halftime.
The Statesmen opened the second half on a 7-2 run to make it a two-possession game, 40-36, but
Wade Lowman scored three straight baskets to push the lead back to 10 points. Parker followed with another and-one, and then a
Xavier Malcom 3 for the Falcons' largest lead of the night, 52-36.
Montevallo sustained its lead the rest of the way for its second-straight win and third in four games.
Lowman scored 20 to follow Parker's 25 points.
Montevallo (4-2, 1-0 GSC) will play its final home game of the fall semester Monday night, Nov. 25 when it hosts Mississippi College for a GSC game at 7:30 p.m.
GAME NOTES
- Montevallo divided its scoring evenly between the two halves, scoring 38 points in each.
- Wade Lowman continued his hot shooting, hitting 5-of-7 in the first half and finishing the game 10-of-16 to keep his season shooting percentage at 66.7%.
- Montevallo has now won two-straight games against Delta State, both in Trustmark Arena, to improve to 4-14 all-time against Delta State.
- UM shot 55% from the floor throughout the game with a 55.56% performance and 55.17% mark in the second half.
- Romario Spence led UM's subs with 9 of the Falcons' 18 points points off the bench.
