Women's Basketball Sends Choctaws Home Empty-Handed, now 2-0 in GSC

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Home court has played a big role in the early season records for both the University of Montevallo and Mississippi College women's basketball teams. On Monday, that advantage belonged to the Falcons, and they were able to keep things rolling at Trustmark Arena.

Montevallo (5-1, 2-0 GSC)  had four players score in double figures in the game, and they forced 23 Mississippi College (2-3, 1-1 GSC) turnovers which led directly to 25 points for the Falcons, as UM took the win 84-62 in the teams' final game before the Thanksgiving holiday break.

Game Notes
  • Paige Ward was the leading scorer for Montevallo in the game, tallying 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting - all from behind the 3-point line. Ward Also had three assists and one steal in the game.
  • Shyan Flack led the Falcons with eight rebounds and poured in 13 points of her own in only 23 minutes of play. She also had a blocked shot.
  • Marisa Snodgrass and Kiya Sain each scored 12 in the game, and the duo also distributed the ball with efficiency. Sain dished out a game-high six assists, and Snodgrass added four helpers as well to go along with seven steals.

How It Happened

1st Quarter
  • Mississippi College opened the game with the first five points of the game, but Montevallo answered quickly and the score remained close until a 10-0 Montevallo run gave the Falcons a 22-14 lead with 2:41 to play in the frame.
  • The Choctaws closed the period on a 10-3 spurt, though, and with 10 minutes in the books, Montevallo led by a single point, 25-24.
2nd Quarter
  • MC tied the score at 26 early in the second stanza, but the rest of the quarter belonged to the Falcons.
  • Montevallo closed the first half on an 18-3 run, and Mississippi College went the final 5:24 of the half without making a shot from the field, and at the break, Montevallo led 42-29.
3rd Quarter
  • Montevallo opened the third frame with an 8-0 run that pushed their lead out to a 21 points just 1:20 into the half, and the Falcons held a comfortable lead for the rest of the quarter. 
  • UM's lead reached as many as 23 points in the frame when Jennifer Andrew hit a layup with just less than a minute remaining, and entering the final quarter, Montevallo was in control and up 63-42.
4th Quarter
  • The Choctaws got the margin below 20 points early in the fourth, but they were unable to make any sort of a run at the Falcons' lead in the frame.
  • Montevallo stretched the lead out to 25 with a jumper from Rachel Baker with 2:02 left in the game, and Montevallo cruised in from there to the 84-62 win.

Montevallo will take the next nine days off before returning to the floor at Trustmark Arena. The Falcons will step out of NCAA play, when they host Stillman College (3-4) - an NAIA opponent - at 6 p.m.
