BIRMINGHAM - As the curtain rose on the 2019-20 University of Montevallo women's basketball season, head coach
Gary Van Atta led his squad into Birmingham, Alabama to take on the Samford University Bulldogs in an exhibition game on Tuesday night.. The Falcons were competitive in the game, but as the night word on, the Bulldogs eased their way out in front to the victory.
Montevallo (0-0) led the game at the end of the first period, but a 29-13 second quarter surge helped Samford (1-0) take the lead on their way to the 81-60 win.
Samford struck first, but Montevallo took charge in the early going. The Falcons put together a 17-2 run that spanned six minutes in the opening quarter.
Shyan Flack put in a layup with 8:25 to play in the first, and freshman
Marisa Snodgrass buried a 3-pointer less than 30 seconds later to give UM the 5-2 lead. The duo combined for the Falcons' first 12 points in the game, before
Kiya Sain and
Aaliyah Rice capped the run to give UM a 13-point lead. Flack and Snodgrass each scored again before the end of the quarter, and with 10 minutes in the books, Montevallo led 21-13.
Samford began to chip away at the Montevallo lead early in the second quarter. Beginning with a pair of free throws at the 6:50 mark, the Bulldogs put together a 13-2 run to tie the score at 30 apiece with 3:15 to play in the half. The run continued and eventually reached 25-4 as Samford took the lead and pushed it to 10 points before settling for an 8-point halftime advantage of 42-34.
The Falcons fought hard in the second half, but Samford slowly stretched out their lead as the clock wound down in the game. The Bulldogs added six points to their lead in the third frame, and seven to it in the final 10 minutes, to pull away to the 81-60 win.
