Volleyball Clinches Spot in GSC Championship With Sweep of Shorter

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo volleyball team wrapped up their berth in the Gulf South Conference Championship with a sweep of the Shorter College Hawks on Tuesday night at Trustmark Arena. The win helped the the Falcons keep pace with the University of West Georgia and Union University. The Falcons trail the Wolves and the Bulldogs by only a half game in the standings.

GAME NOTES
  HOW IT HAPPENED

Set 1
  • The teams split the first 10 points of the match evenly, but then Montevallo took control.
  • The Falcons ran off nine straight points to take a 14-5 lead on their way to the 25-19 set win.
Set 2
  • UM scored the first four points of the second frame, but Shorter rallied to keep the score close into the middle stages of the frame.
  • A 6-1 Falcons' run gave UM a 19-13 lead and the Falcons held off a late charge from the Hawks to win the set 25-23 and open a 2-0 lead in the match.
SET 3
  • Shorter took the lead early in the third set, and the Hawks led 8-7 when the Falcons took control.
  • Montevallo put together an 11-3 run to take an 18-11 lead and that was enough to help UM take the 25-18 win and complete the sweep.
UP NEXT

The Falcons will head out on a crucial final road trip to west Tennessee over the weekend. UM will battle Christian Brothers University (6-22, 3-9 GSC) in Memphis on Friday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. before wrapping up their road schedule with a date against Union (Tenn.) (17-10, 9-3 GSC) in Jackson on Saturday at 2 p.m.
