MEMPHIS - The University of Montevallo volleyball team opened their final road trip of the regular season on Friday night, when they headed to Memphis to take on the Buccaneers of Christian Brothers University. The Falcons controlled the match from the outset, and UM (17-12, 10-4 GSC) took a sweep from CBU (6-23, 3-10 GSC) to keep pace with Union University (Tenn.) in the GSC Standings as the season winds down. The Falcons trail Union by a half game for third in the GSC Standings with t2o matches remaining in the schedule for UM and three for UU.

How it Happened

Set 1

• CBU took three of the first four points of the night, but Montevallo answered with a 7-1 run that included three kills from Dixon and two aces from Fernandez.
• The UM lead reached as much as nine points in the set, and though CBU did cut the deficit to one twice, the Falcons did not relinquish the lead, taking the frame 25-22.

Set 2

• The Falcons again surged in front early in the second frame, but CBU battled back to tie the score at 14. 
• Montevallo answered with a quick 4-0 burst that reclaimed the lead for the Falcons, and again they were able to hold the advantage to the end of the stanza, winning 25-23.

Set 3

• Montevallo opened the final period by taking six of the first eight points, and CBU summoned one last surge to cut the deficit to 11-9.
• After the Buccaneers drew within two, the Falcons put CBU away with a 5-1 run that was followed quickly by a 7-1 spurt that gave UM a 23-13 lead on their way to the 25-17 win to close the set and complete the sweep.

Montevallo will play their road finale for the 2019 regular season in a crucial battle against Union University (Tenn.) (18-10, 10-3 GSC). The winner of the match will have the inside track to a bye in the first round of the upcoming GSC Championship. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
