Falcons Complete Sweep of GSC/SIAC Challenge with win over Tuskegee

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's basketball team completed their season opening weekend in the Gulf South Conference/Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference challenge on Saturday afternoon, and for the second straight year, the Falcons swept the event.

Montevallo (2-0) got big performances from Shyan Flack and Kiya Sain again, as they toppled the Golden Tigers of Tuskegee (0-2) 76-55.

  • Flack followed up her double-double on Friday with a 20-point, eight rebound effort on Saturday afternoon.
  • Sain had 13 points and six rebounds, and she was 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
  • Kourtnie Smith added 11 points and five rebounds, and Paige Ward chipped in 10 points, six assists, and three steals.
  • Flack also had three steals, and Ward and Jennifer Andrew each had a blocked shot.
  • Andrew also had six rebounds.

How it Happened

1st Quarter
  • The first quarter was a back and forth affair that saw seven lead changes and two tie scores.
  • Neither team led by more than three points in the frame, and after 10 minutes of action, the score was tied, 13-13.
2nd Quarter
  • The Golden Tigers led for most of the second frame, but a 10-1 run for the Falcons that spanned 3:29 in the late stages of the frame helped Montevallo take control.
  • The Falcons turned a 24-21 deficit into a 31-25 lead, and that momentum helped UM take a 35-28 lead into the locker room at the half.
3rd Quarter
  • After Tuskegee scored the first two points of the second half, Montevallo ripped off eight straight tallies to build a 43-30 lead with 7:29 to play.
  • Tuskegee closed the gap to five points at 48-43 with 1:45 to play, but Montevallo scored four of the final six points of the frame, and Montevallo led 52-44 with 10 minutes to play.
4th Quarter
  • Montevallo opened the fourth quarter on an 11-0 run to essentially put the game away.
  • Another 10-0 Montevallo run helped the Falcons push their lead to a high-water mark of 27 at 73-48, and UM cruised home with the 76-55 win.

Montevallo will conclude a 3-game home stand to open the season on Wednesday morning with a matinee tilt against the Lions of St. Leo University (1-1). The game is scheduled to tip-off at 11 a.m.
