Montevallo Downs CBU, Clinches No. 2 Spot in GSC

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo closed out its regular season in emphatic fashion Saturday afternoon, steamrolling Christian Brothers, 5-0, in a Gulf South Conference match at Georgine Lemak Field.
 
The Falcons will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming GSC Tournament, which gets under way Nov. 12 with quarterfinal matches at campus sites. Montevallo (12-3-3, 10-2-1) will host Christian Brothers (10-7-1, 6-6-1) in the opening round at Georgine Lemak Field. Romee Contreras was the offensive standout for Montevallo, scoring one goal and adding assists on three others to give her a team-leading seven goals, nine assists and 23 points so far this season.

Melanie Stevens got the scoring going for the Falcons in the 26th minute, firing a shot into the lower left corner of the net for her third goal of the season to give Montevallo a 1-0 lead. About three minutes later, Espy Sanchez put in her fourth goal of the year off an assist from Contreras to send the Falcons into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Michaila Franklin got her first goal of the 2019 campaign in the 49th minute and Kaeri Ward netted her fifth of the season in the 56th minute, both off Contreras assists, to make it 4-0 and Contreras closed out the scoring in the 78th minute on an assist by Zariah Nogales - her first point of the season - to send Montevallo into the postseason on a high note.

GAME NOTES
  • The victory - the Falcons' second straight - extended Montevallo's hot streak to 8-1-1 in its last 10 matches, including 7-1 in its last eight contests.
  • Montevallo finished with the same number of points as West Alabama (31), but the Falcons claimed the second seed in the GSC Tournament by virtue of a higher power rating.
  • Montevallo outshot Christian Brothers, 22-2, in the match, including 11-1 in shots on goal. The Falcons also had five of the match's six corner kicks.
  • Thirteen different Montevallo players had at least one shot, led by Medhali Hernandez (five) and Contreras (three).
  • Annie Mason got the start in goal, played all 90 minutes and made one save to pick up the shutout. Montevallo has posted seven clean sheets this season.
  • Fourteen Montevallo players have scored at least one goal this season and 18 have scored at least one point.
  • Christian Brothers finishes the regular season with just two wins in its last seven matches.
