MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Montevallo women's basketball team fell on the road at Christian Brothers University 92-91 in a Gulf South Conference contest Feb. 16.
Montevallo shot 54 percent (36-of-66) from the floor while Christian Brothers shot 45 percent (31-of-68) from the field, but the difference came at the free-throw line as the Buccaneers made 18-of-25 attempts while the Falcons went to the line just 13 times and made 10 attempts.
Christian Brothers outscored the Falcons 28-16 on points off turnovers while capitalizing on 21 turnovers by Montevallo.
Montevallo outrebounded the Buccaneers 40-30 while outscoring Christian Brothers 46-36 in the paint and 16-10 in second-chance points.
Christian Brothers raced out to a 12-0 lead before settling for a 29-16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Buccaneers stretched their lead to 34-16 early in the second quarter before the Falcons ended the opening half with a furious 36-16 run to carry a 52-50 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Flack gave the Falcons a 55-50 lead with her 3-pointer in the opening minute of the second half and Montevallo held the lead for the majority of the third quarter before carrying a 73-71 lead into the fourth period.
Montevallo stretched its lead to 81-73 following a pair of free throws by
Jennifer Andrew with 5:41 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Buccaneers ended the game with a 19-10 run to hold off the Falcons down the stretch.
Sophomore
Nautika Philpot scored a team-high 26 points and dished out a team-high six assists, while sophomore
Kourtnie Smith grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
The Falcons will return to action Thursday, Feb. 21 on the road at Alabama-Huntsville in Gulf South Conference play. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
