Maryville comeback lifts Saints to 16-13 win over Falcons in conference play

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men's lacrosse team got off to a fast start with a 5-0 lead before Maryville University came from behind in a 16-13 win over the Falcons in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest Sunday, March 10.

Sophomore Thomas Vaesen scored a team-high four goals and also recorded one assist while finishing with a team-best five points.

Freshman Connor Frederick added three goals, while fellow freshman Andru Ross contributed a pair of goals.

Sophomores Alex Dozzi and Ryan Shea contributed one goal and one assist each.

Freshman Anthony Pecoraro scored one goal. Freshmen Colin Jeffrey and Dante Cloutier registered one assist each.

Sophomore Kyle Little registered 12 saves in the contest.

Freshman Luke Stephens finished with a team-high 15 ground balls

1st (11:30) | Freshman Anthony Pecoraro scored an unassisted goal to push the Falcons' lead to 4-0.
1st (11:25) | Vaesen capped the scoring run for the Falcons with his goal off an assist from freshman Colin Jeffrey to give Montevallo a 5-0 lead.
1st (9:38) | Ty Wenck scored a goal off an assist from Jayden Fraser to put the Saints on the scoreboard.
1st (2:59) | Owen Kehoe scored a goal off an assist from Lucas Shafer to cap a 6-0 scoring run for Maryville, which gave the Saints their first lead in the game.
2nd (0:14) | Fraser scored an unassisted goal as the Saints outscored the Falcons 4-2 in the second quarter and carried a 10-8 lead into the break at halftime.
3rd (8:02) | Sophomore Ryan Shea scored an unassisted goal in a man-up opportunity to trim the Maryville lead to 12-11 midway through the third quarter.
3rd (0:56) | Ty Wench scored a goal off an assist from Zach Steltzer in the final minute of the third quarter to give the Saints their largest lead at 15-11.
4th (10:59) | Freshman Jackson Neufeld scored the Falcons' second consecutive goal early in the fourth quarter to trim the Saints' lead to 15-13.
4th (1:41) | The action tightened in the final 10 minutes of the game with the unassisted goal by Shafer accounting for the lone tally late in the contest.

GAME NOTES
  • Montevallo edged Maryville 50-45 in shots attempted, including a 29-28 advantage in shots on goal in the contest.
  • The Falcons finished with 24 turnovers in the contest compared to 20 turnovers by the Saints.
  • Both teams finished 2-of-6 in man-up opportunities.
  • Montevallo dominated in face offs with a 28-4 edge, led by freshman Luke Stephens won 27 face offs and finished with 15 ground balls.
  • The Falcons finished with 58 ground balls compared to 31 ground balls by Maryville.
  • The Saints finished 17-of-23 in clear attempts, while the Falcons successfully cleared 10-of-15 attempts.
